In the early 1930s the people of Inniskea Islands, approximately 50
families, left their beloved home to settle on the mainland in Kilmore Erris.
Most families settled at the tip of the Mullet peninsula in the villages of
Surgeview and Glosh. Three families went to Glenlara, two to Belmullet town and
one to Annagh. The Ancestors of some had been going on the Islands for over 160
years and people had been coming and going there for generations. Previous to
the exodus of the 1930s Emigration from the Islands was relatively limited and
the few who did leave mainly availed of Tuke's Free Emigration Scheme of the
1880s. Later waves of Emigration circa 1900, saw most settle in various
locations in the US & UK. This book is a modest account of who the
Islanders were, from whence they came, the physical landscape of their new home
and their connections to this day.
